Late August and early September are important for volleyball bragging rights in Kentucky. It’s the time of year that the rivalry games among Assumption, Mercy and Sacred Heart set a tone for the next month or two.
These three teams do battle early in the season and again in the last week of the schedule; they will undoubtedly match up in some form or another in this weekend’s Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament. They may face each other in Las Vegas at the Durango Invitational in two weeks and will probably square off in the Asics Challenge in late September in Chicago.
But with No. 1-ranked Assumption’s solid 26-24, 25-15, 25-17 win on the road at the No. 2-ranked Mercy Jaguars, the Rockets have asserted themselves as the clear frontrunner in Kentucky, if not the nation.
